Tom Sherratt

Me in the Lords media centre

Hi,

I’m Tom Sherratt a 22 year old freelance sports journalist, graduating from Staffordshire University, sports journalism with BA Hons 2:1.

This site is to share and show  my work to people who are interested in sport.

As you might have guessed i’m a big sports fan and support Stoke City FCDerbyshire CCC and Sale Sharks RUFC, but also follow religiously  F1, golf, boxing and NFL, you get the point anything that is on television I will watch.

So far in the early stages of my journalism career I have covered cricket, football, netball and athletics.

Currently I am writing for Deep Extra Cover, the home of County cricket news and threeandin which is a football website.

I did three weeks work placement at the Leek Post and Times (Staffs) in the summer 2011 and I worked for the North Staffs and South Cheshire Cricket League ( NSSC) in 2011 and ’12 doing  round ups for all four divisions to be published on their website, which were also used by National Cricketers Association.

In the summer of 2006 I went along with the DJ of the early morning breakfast show at BBC Radio Stoke to see how things worked for a couple of months.

I have also had work published at Athletics Weekly, Staffordshire Knot-out (Cricket magazine) and the Cheadle Post and Times (Staffs) to name a few.

It’s not just print journalism, at university I’ve done a 2 minute video package on Olympic 800m hopeful Emma Jackson, a radio report at Belper Town FC, a highlights reel of Walsall FC reserves Vs Derby County reserves and a commentary piece on F1.

To be able to do these kind of things I have been trained to use; Final Cut Pro, Quark Express 9.1, Audacity, Photoshop 9.1 and Bridge.

At the moment I have achieved 60 words per minute NCTJ Shorthand and internal (Staffs Uni) 80 wpm; I also have my NCTJ Essential Media Law.

However it’s not all work, I play cricket for Oakamoor CC and Staffordshire University. Last season for my club Oakamoor I opened the batting for the first team and hit 693 runs at an average of 36.42.

I also took over the role of captain for the club’s Phoenix team, which is an eight aside, 15 overs per innings match and I really enjoyed the role as captain.
